How would you handle it? - Confronting Bullies.

Unfortunately, bullies are around at every age. It seems as soon as humans begin to interact socially someone comes out of the woodwork that wants to push someone else around.

This is all too true with kids...even toddlers.

As a parent, how do you handle a situation where your child is either picked on or bullied?

Do you talk to the parent? Do you talk directly to the child? How do you tell your kids to handle these situations?

any thoughts on how to handle it with a 2 year old -- mostly non-verbal? we have a little one in class, more verbal than mine, who insists on picking on mine. i try to keep them apart, but it's hard. do you interven? or just let it go... i'm in a quandry.

thanks.

My 7-year-old son and I have watched a wonderful animated show about bulllies by Trevor Romain. It goes through various strategies kids can use to deal with bullies, and it is followed up by a Q & A with kids and Trevor. This really sparked a great discussion with my son, and to this day, we talk about which of the 'strategies' would be useful to deal with different forms of bullying. I am the victim of domestic violence [primarily psychological abuse, but some physical], and I am very aware of not wanting my son: 1) to be a bully like his father; 2) to be bullied like me. It's a tough world out there, and we've talked about how sometimes the 'best' solution is to walk/run away, sometimes it's to confront the bully, sometimes it's safety in numbers - all talked about in the movie. I recommend the show - we rented our copy at the local library.
