My daughter is now in fifth grade, and for the first time is walking to school alone. She only has to walk 2 blocks, and I can see her until she is on school property. My husband was very concerned with her walking to school by her self, but kids to have to grow up sometime and I thought this was the perfect opportunity. She is on her own but I still can watch over her.
