What's New
In my experience using a barrier of some sort has helped with this issue. I have tried this with 2 cats but not with a cat and a dog. It seemed to work out pretty well. The barrier I used was the bathroom door. Make sure there is a space between the bottom of the door and the floor. Its fun to watch them get to know each other under the door. They like to take their arms and feel under the door to the other side. This way if they do not get along with each other at first they can't do any major physical harm to each other b/c the door is in the way. Hope this helps and good luck!

javamommy, I would try introducing them gradually. First you could start out with introducing them with some barrier between them, such as giving the new puppy some space to be introduced into your household, as well as letting the cats smell that there is a new visitor. I've heard that baby gates serve as a good introductory tool. After they are introduced, it's important to slowly grow the time they spend together, possibly rewarding them with treats for their good behavior. Since dogs can sometimes see cats as prey, or toys, it's important to introduce them in such a way so the cat has a good escape plan if the dog gets too agressive. The worst thing you can do is to throw them in a room together and let them work it out themselves!
Good luck with your new dog, but remember cats rule!
