How is the economy affecting you and your family?

The financial future is on the minds of most Americans these days and as the gatekeeper of much of the household budget many moms are cutting back.

How are the recent economic events affecting your family? Is the government doing enough to fix the situation?

If you're tightening your belt, what is the first line-item in your family budget to be cut back?

Any creative ideas on saving a family's bottom line?

I almost never buy anything for myself unless it is an absolute need, and even then I go as cheap as possible. My saving grace these days has been Super Walmart. I do all the grocery and household shopping there including clothes, and home things and I am shocked every time at how much money I save. I also to a very detailed shopping list and meal planning calendar so as to make one larger shopping trip rather than more frequent small ones. This saves gas as well. Our family almost never eats out as well because we just can't afford it.

Things are very tight for my family as well. We definitely do a weekly menu planner mostly for dinners. With our hectic schedules it's nice to know what needs to be defrosted or thrown in the crock pot. We don't have the moeny to eat out anymore so I must be on top of things.

We have cut back dramatically on our driving. I have made doctors, hair appts, etc. much more local. Unfortunately we don't see family as much though, as they are out of town, but we all understand and talk on the phone often.

We have cut back on spending money on clothes. We only buy what is absolutely necessary and it must be on sale!

This isn't too creative, but we are going to start by re-evaluating all of our payments. Lastime we did this, we found we could save on phone bills, insurance etc. With a land line that isn't used much these days, i'm going to look into VoIP for our phone. Also going to get more organized in my menu planning, if i can plan more ahead of time I can keep our grocery bill down. Any other ideas?
