Going back to college...2 kids later.

Now that I'm 27 and I have 2 small kids, I often sit and wonder why I didn't get my act together sooner. Why did I not stay in college and do what I planned to do? I want my kids to be proud of what I do and be happy that mommy wants to help sick people. (I'm going to be a nurse)

It all goes back to the saying "if I knew then what I know now I would've done things differently". Man oh man, is that true. I never thought that I would voluntarily say this without being tormented with hot pokers but, I should've listened to my mom.

School is weird now. I guess it's my age. I don't drink, don't smoke, don't do drugs or curse like a sailor. So naturally I don't fit in with anyone but the 50 somethings going back to school for something to take up spare time. They all pull up in the parking lot with loud rap music, smoke coming out the windows, baseball hats on sideways, rims on the cars, and just a bad attitude. This just makes me feel older. I'm only 27, I know. But I feel like I'm 50 at school, I might as well roll around in Tapioca before I get out of my 2001 Ford Explorer with 2 car seats in the back!

It was 17 years after I graduated from high school when my husband encouraged me to go to college and to take that Early Childhood Education course I had always wanted to do. I was the eldest member of the class but not by much, there were two others who were just a few years younger. I did awesome!! It was one of the most valuable 10 months of my life.

Hang in there! My opinion, take- it or leave it, is that it just may be your prespective! I, too, am a nursing student and my prespective is that there are alot more students in my classes I have seen in your position! Keep up the hard work.

I also finished nursing school after my first two children were born. Even know it was tricky going to clinicals when I just wanted to hold my little ones. I am so glad I did it when the were to young to know that I was studying all night long in between nursing the baby. Now all they know if mommy is a nurse. Keep up the good work.

My personal opinion, education is wasted on the young! I completed grad school in my late 20’s (while pregnant then caring for an infant and working full-time) - I learned so much more and appreciated the learning process more than undergrad. Hang in there - it does pay off at the end, not only for you but also for your children. But, if you feel it’s just too much, find a school or a program that’s geared toward working adults – you get people of all ages in these programs and they all have the same goals, learning and completing the program.

Hang in there!

It will all be worth it in the end.

LOL! I love your insight on the students these days. But you should be proud of yourself, and forget about how old you feel when you go to school. At least you are there b/c you really want to be and you're there to get your education and go start your career to make you and your kids lives better. Good luck to you!
