I've only had Mirena for a short time, a few months. I like it because it is SO convienent. So far I haven't had any negative side effects or anything which is really positive because I had a LOT of sexual side effects with the pill (dryness, moodiness). I did learn however, that when your doctor says it doesn't pay to try and get it before your 6 weeks are up after giving birth. My doctor had said I could do it at 4 wks, so I scheduled for that, thinking the earlier the better. Not cool! The attempted placement was SO painful I thought I would vomit and it took me a few days to decide that I would try again in a few weeks. However, the second time I went in at almost 8wks after giving birth - super easy!! No pain, a little pressure, and the placement went great! As for mensturating... that is really only now starting to settle down. The first couple months were all over the place, but never heavy. It's been well over a month now however, since my last spotting. I would recommend it to anyone.
Good luck!

I like Mirena ... I've had it for a little over 2 years now, after the birth of my 2nd son, and it is the best decision I have made for birth control. I, personally, have not experienced any negative side effects. I liked it because I was able to nurse while having Mirena. Also, I never really got my period ... it's more like monthly lite spotting. I highly recommend it! (especially since I have become quite forgetful these days and to take a pill would ensure that I would be pregnant again.)
