How long should I breast feed?

I hear different stories about how long you should continue to breastfeed your kids. I even heard one story that the longer you breastfeed the smarter your kids will be. Can you share your stories and opinions with me?

I breastfed my son for 1 yr never got sick at all. He's also one of the more advanced in his class. I have a 2 month old that I'm also breastfeeding. When I took my breastfeeding classes they definitely state that the longer you breastfeed the better but the first 6 months are the most important. I have friends that have breastfed up to 2 years but understand that at that point it's more comfort for the child than anything else. I would tell you that do what is best for you, as long as your happy he will be too!! Good luck!! .

I breastfed for a year and stopped because I wanted to. I would have gone longer, but I needed to quit for me. As long as baby gets some breastmilk then I think that is good. I did notice that my son who I nursed for the year did not get sick very often as my other three who were only nursed for 2 months each. I was also reading some of your other posts and noticed that you wanted to get pregnant again now. Well, breastfeeding is a form of birthcontrol, not a 100% effective, but still effective, You may want to keep that in mind. I hope that helps :)
