Kids and cellphones. What is the right age to dial them in?

Can we all agree on an age to get our kids cellphones? Other parents are doing this younger and younger and my daughter keeps telling me, "so and so has one..."

I'm holding out for at least ten-years-old.

At what age do you think it's appropriate, if at all.

Well, I was 17 when I got my first cell phone, and that was before my mother even had one. I feel that if I am a responable parent, and always know where my kids are, they should not need one until they are more on their own. I take them and pick them up where ever they are. Plus with a phone there are so many opportunities to get in trouble: school, boys, strangers??? A young child with a phone is a bad idea.

I wasn't even allowed to have a phone in my bedroom until I was 16 years old (I guess this shows my age). Now kids think they need a cell at 5 years old. My son is 9 and won't have a cell for a long time. Luckily, he's never mentioned getting one to me so I don't think he cares anyway.

This I believe is something to be done case by case. Depends on the situation & the maturity of the kid. If their friends do have them, then that is something to take into consideration. I remember being the black sheep in school. Thats bites! But I would say if they can be responsiable & you monitor it. then really what is it hurting?

I have told my kids' the same thing....they can have one when they can pay for it themselves. I don't even have one so this isn't even an argument for us.

Cell phones for kids is a little ridiculous. They can use the school phone, or another mom's phone. If a child is in a situation where the only way of calling a parent is by use of their very own cell phone, then maybe they shouldn't be there. I have told, and will continue to say to my kids, they can have a cell phone when they get a driver's license and can afford to pay for it by themselves.

This is not an issue for me yet, and I'm dreading when it is. I would hope it would be older than that. I think I'm gonna have the rule, if you can pay for it, you can have it.
