As a work-at-home mom in the new millennium, social media are now at the center of my marketing plans.  I still use many of the marketing techniques that I built my business using, but now they are incorporated with my use of social media.  I write a new article and then spread the word about it using various social media networking sites.  I run an advertising special and rely on these specific tools to create awareness about my business.

Over the last few years, I've realized that there are a few simple ways to make your business stand out in the social media scene:

1. Be authentic

Social media tools are a powerful way for home-based businesses to connect with consumers.  As work-at-home moms, we do much of our marketing firsthand, which gives us an edge that the corporate world just can't match.  Use these platforms to give your business a "personal face," and to make your customers aware that you are accessible to them.  By showing the personal side of your business, you'll create a relationship and sense of loyalty within your customer base.

2. Be positive

To those of us who spend a good deal of time using popular social media websites, it becomes obvious who enjoys marketing using social media tools and who is there simply to post advertisements and move on.  Try to keep your posts upbeat and never use platforms to speak negatively about a customer or business competitor.

3. Be personal

Showing the "soft side" of your business is a wonderful way to build a relationship with your target market.  Don't be afraid to share things about your family from time to time, especially in regard to how they are involved with your business.  You'll want to set boundaries for yourself as to how much and how often you mention personal items, but I encourage you to add this personal touch every now and then.  You'll be pleasantly surprised by the response it brings from your clientele.
