A grandchild's hand drawn treasures are both a privilege and delight for grandparents. Who can resist the smile on a little face as it proudly hands over the newest masterpiece? You want to save them all, but how do you display and save these tiny, and sometimes not so tiny, treasures of their hearts?
Here are a few ideas and tips to help:
When the refrigerator front is full, look around your home and see where you might have some free wall space. Perhaps you have a nursery or playroom for your grandchildren that would be a perfect place to display their artwork. If you don't have any extra room, how about the garage or basement -- who says they can't moonlight as an art gallery? You may even want to rethink a room that has pictures or artwork on the walls you don't really love or are tired of, for it may be time to change it out with something that you really do love!
Creating a grandchild art gallery can be as traditional or as whimsical as you like. For a traditional look, use the same color frames and hang them in an organized pattern. Change out the pictures as they come in, or keep adding to your gallery. For a more whimsical look, paint different shapes and sizes of frames to match the artwork and get creative about how to display them, by shape, color, by grandchild, by age, or by subject. If you don't want to go through the trouble or expense of picture frames, hang a "laundry line" across a wall and use creative clips to "hang" the pictures. Think of using fun desk clips, laundry pins, or curtain clips. You can easily change out new art and it accommodates all sizes of artwork.
If you are crafty or enjoy projects, you can fashion a display board with desk clips for each child. A 2x4 painted piece of wood with large clips attached can hold quite a lot of art and artwork can be easily added and changed. You could also mount a large bulletin board or French memo board where you can display new art and rotate the old out. Grandchildren can get involved in helping you make the displays or managing their newest works of art.
If your home does not have any free wall space, then try some space saving tips. Use a travel-type over the door organizer, preferably clear, and give each child a pocket where they can add their artwork. You could also make or purchase a large photo album or scrapbook and display the artwork in an album. A clear tub organizer for each grandchild would also keep the artwork safe and organized. If you have enough wall space for one or several frames, you can purchase a single cabinet type frame called a "Lil Davinci." This frame is constructed like a cabinet which opens in the front. The Lil Divinci picture frames allow you to easily swap out artwork without taking the frame down and taking it apart. It stores up to 50 pieces of art and can be purchased in several different sizes and as a gallery of frames as well.
Whatever the size of your home and living space, it is easy to make room for your treasures. A little bit of creativity and rearranging can help you make a wonderful art gallery for your little masterpieces.
