The last article I wrote listed the main reasons for changing my career. This time, I'd like to share some of my experience with returning to school.
Re-programming my mind from that of a Producer to that of a Student has been quite interesting. After spending the last 10 years working hard and making solid money, it has been a real adjustment but I still feel that the right decision has been made.
Walking in to my first lab class, I was sure that I would be the oldest guy in the classroom -- but that was not the case. There were scores of guys my age, some older, and some younger, but I was definitely not alone. Don't get me wrong -- I am not going back to a 4-year stint at a California State University filled with kids fresh out of high school (although that might be a good option for some of you out there that are changing careers). The school I am attending is Los Angeles Trade Technical College, which is a trade school located in Downtown LA.
This school is designed for those that are studying a particular trade or are increasing their knowledge of said trade. While some might pass judgement at those who attend "trade" or "technical" schools, statistics show that these educational options can often lead directly to well-paying jobs in growing industries. As for a traditional 4-year degree, it may not always ensure job placement and can many times leave the student with an enormous tab. While the depth of education and level of instruction can be totally different, trade or technical colleges are a great option in fields where hands-on experience is more important then theory.
Besides the mental reprogramming that had to be done, the return to school was actually very refreshing and inspiring. I am extremely excited to dive into the relatively new and expanding field of solar energy and report back with my experiences.
As an ending note, it has really been a blessing to have such a wonderful wife and support group around for this transition!
