Here is a little history about Grandparent's Day...

Many people may think that this day is a "greeting card company" designed holiday, but actually it isn't!

Since 1978, the first Sunday after Labor Day has been set aside to celebrate the importance grandparents play in the lives of their grandchildren.  Originated by a housewife from West Virginia, 2011 celebrates 31 years since signed into law by Jimmy Carter.

Here are 5 great suggestions on how to spend Grandparent's Day this year:

1. Prepare your own personal history book/album or family tree and present it to your family, or spend time talking about what life was like when you were little.  So much has changed!

2. Create a family time capsule.

3. Throw a "Grandkids' Only" Party.  It doesn't have to be anything fancy, but time together and memories made are what is important.  Make it an annual event everyone can get excited about.

4. Take your grandkids on a trip down memory lane.  Together, visit the town where you grew up or spent time as a student or young adult.

5. Make Grandparent's Day the day you start an annual project with a grandchild.  Perhaps it's constructing a tree house, working on a ready-made craft kit, or sewing a special outfit.  Because this Grandparent's Day falls on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, perhaps something to support the troops or an act of patriotism would be a fitting tribute to the day.
